Prestashop: Setting your new site live

This is a companion blog to my previous The Changing of the URL blog post. I’ll be covering the scenario where you’re moving a site that you’ve developed in some hidden corner and now it’s ready for its public debut. Ideally, you’ll have a hosting package that has plenty of space and allows you more than one database so if anything goes terribly wrong you’ll be able quickly and easily to back out.

Physical health

Are you sitting comfortably?

Let’s face it. Webmastering is a sedentary job. Most of my working hours are spent sitting down. I really should have clocked the importance of seating before now. I’m not averse to getting what I think will help me in my daily work. Years ago I asked a friendly physiotherapist about the best chair to get. She told me about something that would cost many thousands of pounds. I was, “OK - that sounds fine but that’s a little out of my range.

Getting Things Done

Being a webmaster these days is to invite comparisons with a plate-spinner. It’s a busy and interesting life with lots of competing interests to take into account if the right balance between the big projects and the small daily maintenance activities is to be found. Over the years I’ve tried many approaches, mainly based on to-do lists. I’ve tried paper-based systems and I’ve tried electronic calendaring. And to be fair most of the things I’ve looked at have mostly satisfied most of the requirements I have, except not quite.

Prestashop: The Changing of the URL

We all know the feeling. Whether it’s hosting or trousers, the time comes when you know you have to make a change. If your trousers are too tight you can try eating less or, heaven forfend, admit defeat and move into a bigger pair. Hosting, similar: if your site attracts lots of visitors there is only a certain distance that slimming down by optimising the settings will take you. Sometimes you just need a host with a bit more to offer.

Security Metrics - Fail!

Safe and Sorry? So you want to take payments on your website? But you don’t want to hand over payment collection to PayPal or Stripe? You really want the responsibility of handling people’s credit card details? I’d strongly advise against it, but if you really must, read on… PCI Compliance All people handling card payments mus be PCI compliant. The full term is Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

Wordpress 5 Already!

There are few items of news more likely to send a non-technical audience to sleep than the announcement that some piece of software has been released with a new number. Are you feeling drowsy now? That’s because WordPress 4 is giving way to WordPress 5. What’s New? There are the usual bug-fixes and security updates. As one would hope. The big thing for the WordPress 5 series is the new editor, Gutenberg.
