Jewelion's Oswestry Picture Book: Valle Crucis, Llangollen (2)

Valle Crucis Abbey of the Cistercian Order was founded in 1201. This is their abbey fronted by the pond which supplied them with their Friday fish.

The Cistercians were also known as the "White Monks" because they wore habits of undyed wool, gathered from their own sheep.

The Cistercians practised a life of strict austerity, rejecting possessions and unnecessary ornament.

The monks of this order lived off the land in remote places "far from the concourse of men".
